200 Hectares of Private Land

Hard Work Pays Off

Russell Eco-Sanctuary is composed of 200 hectares of private land along with a District Council Reserve. This reserve is between Pipiroa Bay (at Okiato, near the car ferry) and Te Wahapu Road (about half way to Russell) and includes some of the “best” forest on Russell Peninsula as well as large, diverse wetlands.

Since 2016 we’ve been working hard on the Eco-Sanctuary to remove all introduced predators.  The results so far are outstanding.  With predators at such low numbers the forest and wetlands are thriving and full of birds …including kiwi, of course!

A Team Effort

The private landowners have kindly granted permission for public access along the walkway through the eco-sanctuary. The sections of the walkway which include this sanctuary are stage 1 and stage 2. It is required for dogs to be kept on a lead and to stay on the track. If you or someone you know wants to start trapping on their private land to give the birds a chance, get in touch with us!
